WHAT we do in Medical Ministry — part 1

What We Are to Do in Medical Ministry

Medical ministry is a sacred calling, one that blends the art of healing with the profound mission of spiritual care. As Seventh-day Adventist medical providers, pastors, and allied health professionals, our work transcends the boundaries of conventional healthcare. It is not merely about treating the body; it is about ministering to the whole person—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In this part of our series, we will explore the key actions and attitudes we must embody as we take up this divine work.

Working from a Religious Standpoint

Our approach to medical ministry must be rooted in a religious standpoint. This means that our work is not just a profession but a mission. We are called to integrate faith into our practice, ensuring that our interactions with patients are imbued with the love and compassion of Christ. Our medical expertise should be a vehicle through which we convey God’s love, offering not only physical healing but also spiritual support.

Engaging the Conscience and Strengthening Character

In every patient encounter, we should aim to engage the conscience and address the character. This involves guiding patients toward moral and ethical decisions that align with God’s will. We are to be instruments in strengthening their character, helping them to make choices that honor God and reflect a Christ-like life. This engagement is not about imposing beliefs but rather gently guiding patients toward spiritual growth and self-awareness.

Placing Spiritual Interests and Soul-Saving First

The ultimate goal of our ministry is to save souls. While we provide excellent medical and surgical care, our primary focus should always be on the spiritual well-being of our patients. This means introducing them to the Great Physician—Jesus Christ, the sin-pardoning Savior. By placing spiritual interests first, we ensure that our work has eternal significance.

Breaking Down Barriers and Building Trust

To reach the heart of our patients, we must first break down barriers and gain their trust. This trust is built through genuine care, empathy, and consistent integrity in our work. Once this trust is established, we can more effectively point patients to Jesus, the true source of healing for both body and soul. Our ministry must always aim to lead patients to a deeper relationship with Christ.

Encouraging Obedience to God’s Laws

A significant aspect of our ministry is educating patients about the importance of obeying God’s laws, particularly those related to health. This includes both the moral laws outlined in the Bible and the natural laws demonstrated in the physiology of their bodies. By helping patients understand and follow these laws, we guide them toward healthier, more fulfilling lives that honor God.

Focusing on Prevention and Self-Control

Preventive care is a cornerstone of our medical ministry. We are called to specialize in this area, teaching patients the principles of self-control and self-regulation. By emphasizing prevention, we not only improve physical health but also help patients develop habits that align with a disciplined, Christ-centered life. Our goal is to empower patients to take control of their health, both physically and spiritually.

Offering Something Better

In all our interactions, we must work by offering something better rather than by criticizing current practices. This positive approach reflects the spirit of Christ, who always pointed to a higher way of living. By offering better alternatives—whether in lifestyle choices, treatments, or spiritual guidance—we can inspire patients to make changes that lead to lasting improvement in their lives.

Providing Spiritual Opportunities

Finally, we should provide opportunities for patients interested in understanding our beliefs to explore them further, such as through church services or Bible studies. These opportunities should be offered with respect and without pressure, allowing patients to make their own choices about their spiritual journey.

A Call to Action

As Seventh-day Adventist medical providers, pastors, and allied health professionals, we have a unique and profound role to play in the world. Our mission is clear: to unite the healing arts with the saving work of the gospel, bringing health and hope to a world in need. Let us take up this work with passion and dedication, for the honor and glory of God. In doing so, we fulfill our highest purpose as medical providers in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, serving not only as healers of the body but as ministers to the soul. The time is now to embrace this sacred calling and to carry forward the mission that Christ has entrusted to us.

It should be our every day goal to show the love of Jesus to each and every person that we interact with. By doing so we will build their trust and their curiosity into what sustains us. We now have the opportunity to share Jesus more in depth. And, the only way to consistently have these love centered interactions is to daily cultivate our relationship with Jesus and seek His guiding in our lives.
Thank you for the reminder that our interactions matter. That there is a reason behind our encounters and our work.
