The Sacred Connection: How Health and Worship Intersect in Medical Ministry

The Divine Touch: God’s Hand in Creation and His Laws

In the grand narrative of Scripture, we find that there are only two instances where God, the Creator of the universe, directly touched something with His own hands. Unlike the rest of creation, which God brought into existence through His spoken word, humanity was formed in a unique and intimate manner. The Bible tells us that God “formed man from the dust of the earth” and later “formed woman from a rib taken from Adam.” The other instance of God’s direct touch was when He inscribed the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone, writing them “with the finger of God.” These two moments—God’s formation of humanity and the inscription of His moral law—hold profound significance, particularly when we consider that in both, the tablets of stone and the flesh of man, He placed His laws. In stone, He placed the moral law, and in the flesh of Adam and Eve, He embedded the laws of nature that govern our being, known collectively as physiology.

The Laws of God: A Transcript of His Character

The laws that God inscribed in stone and those written into our very flesh are more than just rules; they are a transcript of God’s character. The moral law, expressed in the Ten Commandments, reveals God’s principles of love, justice, and righteousness. Similarly, the laws of nature and physiology reflect His wisdom, design, and care for our well-being. By understanding and obeying these laws, we gain a deeper insight into the character of God. Obedience to these divine principles is not about legalism; it’s about aligning our lives with the character of the Creator, allowing His love and wisdom to guide our actions.

Health as Worship: Obeying God’s Laws in Flesh and Spirit

When we obey the moral law written in stone as an act of devotion, we engage in worship. But worship extends beyond the spiritual; it encompasses our physical being as well. The laws of nature and physiology, written into our bodies, are also the laws of God. When we obey these health laws out of love for God, this too is an act of worship. This perspective transforms the significance of healthy living. It is no longer just about striving for longevity; it becomes an expression of devotion and love for our Creator. In this context, taking care of our health is not a legalistic endeavor but a sacred act of worship, rooted in our relationship with God.

Love and Devotion: The Only True Motivation for Obedience

Both the moral law and the laws of nature inscribed in our flesh can only be genuinely obeyed as acts of love and devotion. Attempting to keep the moral law or resist the natural cravings of our carnal nature without a foundation of love for God is destined to fail. The Bible tells us that “the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” This verse tells us that even the Bible recognizes the impossibility of obedience from a standpoint of carnal desires. It does not matter if the law we are attempting to be obedient to is written in stone or written in our flesh. Both are impossible to truly obey separate from the power of love to drive that obedience. This truth underscores the futility of both legalism and selfish interest. Obedience that is driven by selfish interest, or a legalistic approach of obligation or fear, is not true obedience at all. However, when our actions are motivated by a heart full of love and devotion to God, they are accepted by Him as worship. In the realm of medical ministry, this understanding is crucial. It shifts our focus from mere rule-keeping or selfishness to a relationship-driven obedience that honors God in both spirit and body.

The Intersection of Medicine and Ministry: A Holistic Approach to Worship

Combining medicine and ministry allows us to address the full spectrum of human existence—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social. It acknowledges that caring for our bodies is as much a part of our worship as caring for our souls. By promoting health and well-being through medical ministry, we encourage individuals to live in accordance with God’s design for their lives. This holistic approach not only improves physical health but also deepens spiritual devotion, as it recognizes every aspect of our lives as an opportunity to honor God. This combined approach provides power to overcome that would not otherwise be available to us, but the power only comes from a relationship with God based on love. If we learn to gain victory over lifestyle related challenges out of love and devotion to God, we suddenly realize we can gain victory over sin in our lives the same way. Victory in one area of our lives through love and devotion prepares us for victory in other areas of life in the same manner. In the end, the intersection of medicine and ministry helps us have power, gain victories and teaches us to approach both major lifestyle challenges and sin in our lives through devotion to God as an act of worship.

Conclusion: A Call to Holistic Worship Through Medical Ministry

In summary, the integration of medicine and ministry is not just a practical approach; it is a profound expression of worship. By obeying both the moral law as well as the laws of nature and physiology written into our flesh, and doing both out of love and devotion to God, we engage in a form of worship that encompasses our entire being. This perspective changes how we view health and well-being, seeing them as integral parts of our spiritual life. As we continue to unite medicine and ministry, let us do so with the understanding that in caring for the body, we are also caring for the soul, and in both, we are worshiping the God who created us and wrote His laws into our very existence.
